In the Middle-Ages the church became a significant pilgrimage site. The former Queen of France, Anne of Austria, visited the Cathédrale in 1623. Queen Anne of Austria's pilgrimage to the Cathédrale Sainte-Anne in Apt in 1623 was related to her struggles with infertility. Anne of Austria and her husband, King Louis XIII, experienced many years of childlessness and multiple miscarriages.
